Guides and comparisons

This page describes the 39 guides that belong to the tools. Each one is published on the site of the tool it is about, so when you finish reading you are one click from the tool itself. They come in three kinds: comparisons that check what several free tools really allow, alternatives pages for people leaving a service that went paid or changed its terms, and explainers about how a technique or a file format works.

The comparisons are written by the site that owns one of the tools in them. Most carry the date they were checked, between September and early October 2026, and that is the date to hold them to. The groups below follow the job in front of you rather than the site that wrote the guide, and each entry says what the guide actually covers.

Photos and backgrounds

11 Best Free Background Removers compares eleven removers by name, among them remove.bg, Adobe Express, Canva, Photoroom and Clipdrop. Its question is what happens at the download button: a credit counter, a shrunk preview, a watermark or the real file. Background Removers Compared covers a similar field in a shorter format, with the 2026 free limits, accounts, watermarks and per-image costs side by side and a verdict for each tool.

People who used remove.bg have two guides. Free Remove BG Alternative sets the free tier of remove.bg against BGNinja, which gives full resolution for up to 10 photos a day without an account. remove.bg API Moves to Leonardo.Ai on 1 December 2026: Free Alternative is the dated one: what changes on 1 December 2026, what to do with credits you already bought, and how BGNinja compares.

Transparent PNG Explained answers what a transparent PNG is, how the alpha channel works, why a JPG cannot do it, why hair is where cut-outs usually go wrong, and when to choose PNG, WebP or JPG. Remove Background Photography Tips starts from the other end with five habits at the moment you shoot a photo that cuts out cleanly, and what a tool finds hard anyway. What your photos reveal is about the hidden data block in a photo file, meaning GPS location, device, timestamps and sometimes a name. It shows where that data hides by file type, which platforms strip it and which do not, and ends with a three-second checklist before you share a file.

Old photos and restoration

Why Old Photos Fade is the chemistry: unstable dyes and silver, what light, heat, humidity and acidic storage do over years, why color prints often turn orange and black-and-white prints yellow-brown, and what restoration can and cannot bring back.

Before the scan, How to Clean Old Photos Before Scanning deals with dust and handling: which brush, cloth and blower to use, what never to put on a print, how to treat mold and photos that are stuck together, and which marks to leave to software. How to Scan Old Photos Properly is about the scan itself: 300, 600 or 1200 dpi, scanning with only a phone, the file format to keep for restoring and printing later, and what to do when a scan comes out sideways or too small.

After the scan, AI Photo Restoration Explained describes what the tools do: upscaling, colorizing as a prediction of color from context, and face restoration as a specialist job, with an honest section on what they invent. Best Free Photo Restoration Tools checked twelve colorizers and restorers on 2 October 2026 for account rules, watermarks and per-image prices, and says that PicReviver is one of the twelve. The two switching guides start from what the other service limits: Free Remini Alternative from Remini's ads or weekly subscription, and Free Palette FM Alternative from Palette.fm's watermarked free previews shrunk to 500×500 pixels.

Passport photos

Best Free Passport Photo Makers looks at a business model: most tools let you crop the photo for free and charge to download it without a watermark. It checked eleven makers and has a section on where the others do better than PassportNinja. Passport Photo Rules Explained puts the 13 size templates in one table, with print size, head height and background, and says what the checker can measure and what only you can judge. Digital vs Printed Passport Photos explains that one crop makes two files, a digital file in pixels for an online upload (600 dpi for most templates; the US DV-lottery file is scaled to 600 by 600 pixels and the China portal file to 420 by 560) and a 10×15 cm sheet at 300 dpi with cut lines for a paper application, and how to print that sheet at a kiosk, which typically costs €0.15 to €0.35.

Audio, voice and music

10 Best Free Stem Splitters compares ten vocal removers by their actual free limits, checked on 2 October 2026; the usual pattern is ten free minutes and then a card. How AI Stem Separation Works explains why a mixed song is like a baked cake, how old phase tricks and center-channel removal gave way to hybrid AI models, and why some instruments come out cleaner than others. The two switching guides, Free LALAL AI Alternative and Free Moises Alternative, describe StemGrab's split into six stems plus an instrumental for tracks up to 15 minutes, with 10 free splits a day, no minute meter and no account.

For speech, 11 Best Free Audio Noise Removers sets eleven noise removers against each other; free noise removal is usually measured in minutes or hours a month rather than files a day. Free Adobe Podcast Alternative starts from Adobe's rate limit, lists the limits side by side and says where Adobe Podcast is the better choice.

Video

Best Free Video Background Removers compares ten tools, among them Unscreen (now part of Canva), Adobe Express, Runway, Kapwing and VEED, on watermarks, credit systems and Pro-only gates. Green Screen vs AI Matting is the method comparison: when a real green screen still wins, where automatic cut-outs fail, and a decision table by type of video. Free Unscreen Alternative is for people who used Unscreen, and compares Canva with VideoBGNinja, which returns a transparent WebM, a green-screen MP4 and an alpha matte.

What Is a TikTok Watermark? explains the two parts of the mark, the moving logo and the @username, why TikTok adds them and when removing them is fair. Remove TikTok Watermark Tips is the practical follow-up for a still image: brush size, screenshots, busy backgrounds and what to avoid.

Transcripts and subtitles

Best Free Transcription Tools compares eleven tools by name and writes down the real limits: daily caps, minute limits, watermarks or sign-ups, checked in September 2026. How Accurate Is AI Transcription? explains word error rate, what hurts accuracy, what to expect from clean and from noisy audio, and how to record so the transcript comes out nearly perfect. SRT vs VTT Subtitles sets the two subtitle formats side by side with examples you can copy and a note on which platforms want which.

The alternatives guides start from a limit: TurboScribe Alternative from TurboScribe's daily cap as last reported (3 files a day, not re-confirmed on 2 October 2026), and Free Kapwing Alternative for Subtitles from Kapwing's ten-minute free limit and its watermark. ScribeGrab for Obsidian is a setup guide: the one field to change so a transcription plugin for Obsidian talks to ScribeGrab instead of a paid service, every setting spelled out, and the limits stated.

Documents and file formats

Best Free Document Scanner Tools compares eleven scanners on what they ask of you, whether they need an account or the internet, whether they read the text with OCR, and whether multi-page documents are capped. Free iLovePDF Alternative compares five free PDF tools, with limits checked on 2 October 2026 and a section on where iLovePDF is the better pick.

12 Best Free Image Converters asks where your photos actually go and what each tool caps: twelve converters, their batch sizes and which of them take HEIC. Free FreeConvert Alternative starts from FreeConvert's 20 conversion minutes a day. What Is a HEIC File and How Do I Open It? explains the format iPhones use by default, why it will not open everywhere, how it compares with JPG, and how to turn it into one.

How to read a comparison

A comparison is a snapshot. Free limits, prices and queues change, so look at the date on the page and try a tool with your own file before you trust any ranking, because a tool that wins on a clean studio recording can lose on a noisy phone clip. The alternative pages are written by the site that publishes them, which means they are not neutral. Read them as a pointer to what a free tool can do for you, then test the tool and judge the result yourself.

Explainers age better than comparisons. How a stem splitter separates a voice, why a print fades or what a transparent file really contains does not change when a service raises its prices, so those are the guides worth bookmarking.

What these guides do not do

None of this is legal advice, and none of it promises a result. A cut-out can still have rough edges, a restoration cannot invent a face that is gone, and a transcript of two people talking over each other will still need correcting by hand. The category pages on this site say where each group of tools stops working well, because that saves you the upload.

If a guide is wrong or out of date, tell me through the contact page. A correction is worth more to me than a compliment, and the fix goes into the page it was found on.
